18 things i learned at 18

I find it weird that I’m posting something with zero sarcasm in it… How lovely :)… Oh, there we go, squeezed a little in. It’s also weird that I wrote this entire list without any mention of mental illness. But I am positive that I could make an infinite list surrounding that… Anyway, these are some of the things I’ve come to believe over the last 18 years. It’s a bit overdue seeming how my birthday was 4 months ago, but here you go anyway:

  1. You and your feelings are always valid. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

  1. Do not let anyone ever make you feel like a lesser you. No one knows you better than you. They may think they do. But I promise you, no one knows you like you. And that will never change.

  1. Friends come and go, and that’s okay. But the memories will always stay with you. Be thankful for them, and their memories.

  1. Some people are brought into your life to simply teach you a lesson. If you come across that, take it and run with it. Even if it’s hard, don’t ask questions.

  1. It will be okay.

  1. Life is like a scale—it will always find its way back to the center. You will never always be sad, at some point it has to go back up. But never, ever count on always being happy because I promise you, the scale will tip back down.

  1. Life is a constant series of choices. Sometimes you are going to make the wrong choice—hell, a lot of the time you are going to make the wrong choice—but it’s going to work out.

  1. Never let your self-doubt come in the way of you being a better you. You are strong enough to push that voice out of the way.

  1. Don’t always listen to the voice inside your head. You may need to instead sit down and talk with it.

  1. Shit happens. Sometimes the best you can do is suck it up and move on.

  1. Allow yourself to feel; embrace it. By allowing yourself to feel, you allow yourself to thrive in the worst of situations.

  1. Your brain is your most powerful weapon. Learn as much as you can about the things you believe in or are passionate for. Nothing can compete with knowledge.

  1. Never stop chasing your dreams. Once you do, there really isn’t a point. So no matter how hard it is—fight. You will thank yourself later.

  1. Be the kind of person and do the things that will make your future self proud.

  1. Always, always listen to other people. Everyone knows something that you don’t.

  1. If you ever need perspective, look to the ones you love. Allow them to remind you why you must fight to make them proud.

  1. You can change the world. Find the thing you love and use it to help others.

  1. Look at the stars. Remember how small you are. Let them remind you that anything is possible—you are capable of great things. If you ever forget this, they will always be there to help you find your way back.
